Women Being Controlled in The Yellow Wallpaper -- essays research pape

The Yellow Wallpaper Today, women have more freedoms than we did in the early nineteenth century. We have the right to vote, seek positions that are normally meant for men, and most of all, the right to use our minds. However, for women in the late 1800’s, they were brought up to be submissive housewives who were not allowed to express their own interests. In the story, â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper,† by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a woman is isolated from the world and her family because she is suffering from a temporary illness. Under her husband’s care, she undergoes a treatment called â€Å"rest cure† prescribed by her doctor, Dr. Weir Mitchell. It includes bed rest, no emotional or physical stimulus, and limited access to people. However, due to isolation, the woman creates a delusional relationship with the yellow wallpaper in her bedroom. It’s patterns stand for everything that is going on in her current life. She is a lonely woman who yearns to escape the wa lls around her and be free. As the story begins, the woman in the story is suffering from temporary nervous depression and has just been released from a sanitarium. Because she is ill, her husband John has been given instructions from her doctor on how to help her recuperate. â€Å"He is very careful and loving, and hardly let’s [his wife] stir without special direction† (Gilman, 451). This treatment confines her to her room upstairs. She is also required to have plenty of bed rest and is restricted from people and stimulation. However, one can say that such instructions will cause the illness to continue because of a lack of activity, isolation from the outside world, especially family members. It appears the woman in the story wants to ... ...rld and the woman represents her. Ultimately, John’s wife concludes that her only escape from the room is to tear down the wallpaper. In doing so, she releases herself and takes control of her life. Gilman has based this story on her own experience. She gives readers a glimpse on how women were restricted from mental stimulus and creative thinking because they were forced to conform to societies’ norms. Do you want to be teased because of your cultural background, religion, accent or even your skin colour? The truth is Racism is happening everywhere everyday RASCISM IS BULLYING! According to the Macquarie dictionary, Racism has two important meanigs.1. Human races have special and different characteristics which determine their particular cultures, USA. Involving the idea that one’s own race is better than any other race.2 offensive or even violent behaviour to members of any other race arising from such a belief. Bullying means frightening or ordering smaller or even weak people around. Racism can be seen in incidents of racist abuse, harassment indifference to cultural diversity, and discrimination. It will be good if racism disappears but the true fact is many people around would say mean and rude things about one another. It is unfortunate that people find a way to dislike others who are different from themselves. RASCISM IS BULLYING!!! people of all heritage backgrounds should be treated equally. There is no reason to put others down just because they are different. It is not fair to point out others just because yours aren’t obvious. If you have been teased look at them seriously and say would you liked to be called names or be made fun of? Simply just because you speak a different language or like to eat food of a different culture or like artjworks of a certain cultural style or simply because you have a different type of skin colour? No, you wouldn’t!!! RASCISM IS BULLYING! Why is it that in this day and age it is still ok to be racist? We the younger generation have the opportunity to stop racism and to accept everyone as equals. We the younger generation should come together and strive for equality. We should all be able to feel that we are accepted for who we are, and wherever we are. I don’t know the author of this beautiful poem but I’d like to thank him or her for such a wonderful piece written and it goes like this: What if all the trees were oaks? How plain the world would seem; no maple syrup, banana splits, and how would orange juice would be? Wouldn’t it be a boring place, if all the people just one colour, just one language, just one family name! ~but~  if the forest were the world, and all the people were the trees; palm and pine, bamboo and willow, live and grow in Harmony. Aren’t you glad my good  friend, different though we be; we are here to help each other, I learn from you, and you, from me!

The film Hidden Figures is based on a true story and adapted from the book ‘Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race’ by Margot Lee Shetterly. The movie is centered around a trio of African-American women who worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and played an essential role in sending John Glenn to space amidst a burgeoning Space Race between the United States of America and Russia. Based in Hampton, Virginia in the 1960’s, film depicts the deep racism and sexism prevalent in the United States at that time. The film provides a glimpse of the stark realities that black women faced at the time. As she was the only black person in the office, her peers made sure to provide her with a â€Å"color ed† coffee pot which they did not fill with coffee. However, the most blatant injustice was the fact that she lost hours of work because she was forced to run back and forth to the only â€Å"colored† bathroom on the entire NASA complex. Nevertheless, her struggles remained an unseen issue to her colleagues because it was not their reality, and the lack of having a bathroom near their desk did not negatively impact them. It was not until she was questioned about her daily absence that she was able to raise the problem with her supervisors and confront her peers. It took her raising the issue, making this â€Å"hidden† issue visible, for quantifiable change to take place. Sometimes in order for change to take place, a marginalized group must be willing to make visible injustices they face and someone in a position of authority be prepared to articulate how that injustice is negatively impacting everybody. However, it most often that the people in positions of authority are unwilling to give up their privilege. In Hidden Figures, the protagonists do the work, but those in the position of power get the title, recognition, and pay.
